Stone face The Department of Foreign Languages offers four semesters of Elementary Italian classes.

Italian 101: Elementary Italian 1

Italian 101 is the first in a series of Italian Courses (Italian 101, 102, 203, 204) and is designed for students who have no previous Italian instruction. The course is part of WVU’s Liberal Studies Program, Humanities and Fine Arts (Cluster A) and of WVU’s General Education Curriculum, Objective 4 or 8. The course will focus on enabling students to communicate effectively in Italian and to understand an alternative way of living. Students learn greetings and introductions, numbers, how to find their way around, nationalities, how to describe themselves, their families and others, and how to speak about hobbies, sport and the weather. Students will learn about the Italian school and university system, and about Italian favorite sports. They will also learn Italian geography.

Italian 102: Elementary Italian 2

Italian 102 is the second in a series of Italian Courses (Italian 101, 102, 203, 204) and is designed for students that have successfully completed Italian 101. This course is part of WVU’s Liberal Studies Program, Humanities and Fine Arts (Cluster A) and it’s part of the General Education Curriculum, Objective 4 (Issues of Contemporary Society) or 8 (Western Culture).

The course is part focus on enabling students to communicate effectively in Italian, understand alternative views and cultures and understand an interdependent world. Students will learn how to speak in Italian about food and drinks, their everyday life, clothing, the entertainment industry and heath issues. Students will learn about the Italian food and wines, Italian fashion, Italian TV and the Italian medical system. They will also learn Italian geography.

Italian 203: Elementary Italian 3

Italian 203 is the third in a series of Italian Courses (Italian 101, 102, 203, 204) and is designed for students that have successfully completed Italian 101 and 102.

The course is part of WVU’s Liberal Studies Program, Humanities and Fine Arts (Cluster A), and and it’s part of the General Education Curriculum, Objective 4 (Issues of Contemporary Society) or Objective 8 (Western Culture).

The course will enable students to communicate effectively in Italian, understand alternative views and cultures and understand an interdependent world.

Students will learn how to speak in Italian about traveling, shopping for food, the place where they live, cars and traffic, music and theatre. Students will learn about the Italian vacations, Italian markets, Italian weddings, Italian folklore and Italian music. They will also learn Italian geography.

Italian 204: Elementary Italian 4

Italian 204 is the fourth in a series of Italian Courses (Italian 101, 102, 203, 204) and is designed for students that have successfully completed Italian 101 and 102 and 203. This course is part of WVU’s Liberal Studies Program, Humanities and Fine Arts (Cluster A), and it’s part of the General Education Curriculum, Objective 4 (Issues of Contemporary Society) or 8 (Western Culture).

The course will help you to acquire the ability to use what you have learned by focusing on seven essential communicative functions in Italian (describing, comparing, reacting and recommending, narrating in the past, talking about likes and dislikes, hypothesizing, and talking about the future), and to help to achieve greater cohesion in speaking and writing abilities. Further, this course will give you opportunity to apply these skills as you learn more about Italian culture through authentic sources.

The course enables students to communicate effectively in Italian, understand alternative views and cultures and understand an interdependent world.

Students will learn how to speak in Italian about art, literature and history, about politics and about social issues. Students will learn about the Italian art and literature, Italian politics, the Italian job market and Italian social issues. They will also learn Italian geography.

Italian 304: Advanced Conversation

Course Description: As a course leading to the Minor in Italian Studies, Italian 304 is designed to refine and apply skills in writing, speaking, reading and listening acquired at the requirement level (Italian 102-204). The class will be entirely in Italian, and you will be expected to participate actively using language skills you are learning.
